The Dunthorpe/Riverdale neighborhood is located just south of Portland in unincorporated Multnomah County. The exclusive community is east of Highway 43, along the banks of the Willamette River. The incredibly private (often obscured) mansions and residences usually include hefty price tags, expansive lots, and lavish square footage. Some even have their boathouses and docks. The starting price for these homes is about $800k and can reach up to several million dollars for exceptional properties. This enclave appeals to local celebrities. Actor Danny Glover and some of the Portland Trailblazers call this home. Dunthorpe and Riverdale run their own school district. Both Riverdale Grade School and Riverdale High School are rated as exceptional by the state of Oregon’s Department of Education. And as would be expected, test scores are high and college attendance rates are well above average. Intense discussions are ongoing about how to upgrade Riverdale Grade School’s historic building. Famous Portland architect A.E. Doyle originally designed it for 50 students. About 300 K-8 students currently attend. The prominent Dunthorpe community overwhelming approved a $21 million bond measure to pay for upgrades, but discussion on exactly how to do that is ongoing. Metro, Portland’s metro wide transportation agency, has proposed extending the Portland street car from the South Waterfrontarea, through Dunthorpe, to Lake Oswego. Some wealthy Dunthorpe residents are heavily protesting the proposal because they’re worried about the impact on noise, safety, and security that the streetcar would bring to Dunthorpe. Residents suggested running the streetcar down nearby Macadam Blvd instead. No decisions about the streetcar’s fate have been made yet. Dunthorpe is a short drive from downtown Lake Oswego or downtown Portland. Bus service is offered along Macadam Blvd/Highway 43 to both Lake Oswego and downtown Portland.
